"Nice casting," Jared grinned.

No harm done, and her charm must have been fairly strong, to render a person temporarily immobile.

"Relax," Jared said. "Take a deep breath, wait for a few seconds, and then try again."

In his general experience, the more you panicked, the more your thought a spell might not work, the less likely it became for the spell to be executed properly. Belief matters as much as, if not more than, concentration.

Then she tried again "IMMOBULUS!" she cried out, then a flash of light and then a bang then she fell off her chair. OUCH
Ouch.

"Need a hand?" Jared asked, not unkindly. "It's two flicks before the incantation," he added. To cast the charm, and not fall off one's chair instead.

What?

Taking a deep breath, she gave two sharp flicks, and said "Immobolus," more forcefully than she had last time. It started bouncing even faster than before, and continued to speed up. She groaned, "What am I doing wrong?" she said aloud.
"The flicks should be more gentle," Jared said, pausing by Emmaleigh's desk to take a look at her amazing bouncing ball.

Flick.

Flick.

And hey presto. One bouncing ball now frozen in mid air.
"Good job, Mia."

He'd thought she might stomp on the poor ball, for a moment there.

Jared came to a halt by the desk of the Gryffindor That Chuckled. "Everything alright?" He asked, tones neutral.

He had his doubts.

This was going to be the longest year ever!

"Thanks so much, Belle, and I'm trying not to, but I do worry about all my friends when I don't see them, Benjamin included, but I think it's worse when he's away," she whispered back.

Giggling and whispering and yelling and snippets of conversation that sounded like boy talk.

Girls.

"It seems most of you have the hang of the Freezing Charm. You'll get to practice it again before the end of the lesson. For now, let's move on to the next charm, the Banishing Charm."

"The Banishing Charm is the counter-charm to one of the most common spells, the Summoning Charm or accio, meaning it directs the target away from the caster. The incantation is Depulso. De-PUHL-so," he repeated, more slowly, emphasizing the 'puhl.' "To cast it, one points at the target, says the incantation, and then banishes the target as desired. Remember that, the target keeps moving until it is stopped - at the caster's intention or by an obstacle - or the charm wears off. Unlike Leviosa, this charm cannot be used to keep the target stationary in mid-air so, if you let go of it in mid-air, the target falls down."

Right on top of your head, if you're unlucky enough.

"There's an open box in the center of the room." It had appeared there, a simple cardboard box, in the middle of the large, vacant space that faced all the chairs. "Try to banish the balls in front of you right into it." More small balls, these stationary in mid-air, had appeared in front of each student. Soft balls, as Jared doubted the students might not hit desks and chairs and walls and each other in the beginning.

Though he could hope.
