“TONKS!”

Ted turned around when he heard me calling his name, and looked at me approaching with a surprised and somewhat worried expression.

I chuckled. “I’m not gonna do anything to you.” I said, coming beside Ted. “We’re friends, right?” We didn’t know each other really well, but we were on friendly terms.

“Uh, sure.” Ted said.

“Great. So why aren’t you taken Andromeda to the ball tonight, Ted?” I asked.

“I, uh, her sisters. She says she doesn’t care what they think, but she does. They’re her sisters, and they already don’t forgive her for being a Gryffindor, but going to the dance with a muggle-born. I really just didn’t want her to be in any trouble.”

He was a pretty decent guy, I decided. “Here’s a piece of advice, not going to the ball with you, is just making Dro miserable. She cares more about you then approval from our idiotic family. Just a thought.” I said, with a small shrug.

Upon walking into the common room James was waiting there for me, just like I thought he would be. “Sirius! Where you been?”

I gave a small shrug. “There was something that I needed to do.” I replied simply. That was enough for James.

“We should probably get ready, Prefect Remus might tell us off.” James said.

“Sure. It’s only a ball, it’ll just take like five minutes to get ready.” I said, following James up to the boy’s dorm.

It took me a bit longer than five minutes to get ready, but close enough. I got quickly dressed and, like James, made an attempt to have my hair look a little less ruffled. I didn’t really care that much, but my hair was rather tame and looked perfect. But James, he was a different story – his hair sticked up everywhere, there was just no helping it.

“Ready?” I asked looking at James.

“Yeah, I suppose so.”

It just occurred to me then, that somehow I’d been distracted, and had never made sure that James was taking a date, or if he was still blindly hoping for Lily. I couldn’t quite believe that I’d just forgotten. “So, who’s your date?”

“Uh, I asked Rianne.” James shrugged, walking with me down from our dormitory to our common room.

“The Italian girl?” I asked, sitting down on the arm of a chair to wait for Adriana to come down. Who knew how long that could take?

“Yeah. She’s pretty cool.” James said, giving me a grin. But I didn’t have to ask to know that he wasn’t interested in her, he just thought that she was cool.

“How long to you suppose the girls have been up there getting ready?” I asked, rolling my eyes.

“All day?” James suggested, with a smirk.

“You know, I really wouldn’t be very surprised.” I laughed, but at that moment we heard footsteps, and then Lily came down the stairs. I turned to look at James, who was staring at Lily, unable to take his eyes away from her.

She was wearing a long pale blue dress that had two silver bands around the middle, and the dress framed her small figure. Her always fiery red hair fell in curls down her back, and her soft brown eyes looked back at James in worried surprise. “James, Sirius.” She said. “Hello, but I need to go.” She said, averting her eyes away from James as she walked past him, and disappearing out the door.

“Why does that always happen?” James asked.

Thankfully, before I had to try and answer him, we were interrupted once again by the sound of more footsteps, this time it was Adriana. I noticed the huge difference between the way Lily and Adriana came down the stairs. Because Adriana walked down with all of her usual confidence and pride in her black dress, looking amazing like she usually did.

The biggest difference, however, was my own. Because I reacted nothing like James just did, and I never actually have looked at someone that way.

I scowled mentally at this annoying voice in my head, because I had no idea where these trails of thoughts were coming from. It almost sounding like I envied James, somehow, but I didn’t. It was confusing, irritating, and I shoved it to the back of my mind, not really wanting to think on it much longer.

“Adriana,” I flashed Adriana a charming smile, holding out my arm. “You look lovely, as always.”

“You’re looking rather charming, yourself.” She said, flicking her hair over her shoulder.
