“I can’t tell you”, replied Xavier, lowering his wand. “Look I know where she is... it’s too dangerous to send a patronous. So... I’ll go get her myself.” He added with some conviction.
“Too dangerous to send a patronous!” exclaimed Charlie who managed to find his voice, “You lot are telling me off because I took her to visit a
domesticated dragon,” Charlie particularly emphasised domesticated, “...when he’s got her mixed up in something so dangerous she can’t even be contacted!” he yelled pointing his finger at Xavier.
Xavier flicked his wand, and one of the silver goblets from the table went flying in Charlie’s direction narrowly missing his head.
“Oh shut up,” he spat, “She’s not in any real danger, it’s just best not to risk sending a patronous, they’re not exactly subtle” he added. Remus looked resigned, he had no idea where Ellouise was, nor what danger she might be in, how was he supposed to trust Xavier?
“She said she’d be home for dinner,” came Harry’s voice. His small face peered around Sirius’s figure into the kitchen, Ron stood in his shadows nodding.
“Harry... did Elle tell you where she was going?” asked Lily as she turned to face her son.
Harry shook his head, “No, she just said she wanted to get some fresh air and that she’d be back later”, he said. “What’s going on?” he asked as he and Ron went to take a seat at the kitchen table. Their eyes jumped from Charlie, who was red in the face, to Xavier who held his wand limply at his side, to Remus who had gone incredibly pale. Lily extended her arm and pat him on the shoulder, “She’s smart and strong, she’ll be ok”, she said encouragingly, Remus didn’t respond.
Xavier rounded the kitchen table and approached Remus, placing his wand back in his pocket.
“Remus, this is something Ellie really wanted to do... I wasn’t going to let her do it on her own. Now I would appreciate it if you let me handle this. I won’t let anything happen to her.” Xavier held Remus’s eye contact, even though the air stung his eyes and tears formed in the corners.
“Give me one good reason why I should trust you?”
It took Xavier a while to respond, he hadn’t thought about saying it out loud before, and certainly not in front of so many people... or without Ellouise present.
Xavier took a deep breath, mustering all the courage he possessed.
“Because I love her.”
Remus nodded, he had suspected as much for some time, and he knew Xavier wouldn’t let any harm come to her. He placed his hand on Xavier shoulder and gave him a manly, awkward embrace.
“Keep us posted will you”, he said as he watched Xavier move to leave the kitchen.
Sirius pat him on the back, a grin spread across his face, “Knock her out with that Black charm”, he said winking at his son, James, Lily, Remus and Naomi couldn’t help but laugh.
"What are you talking about?" asked Xavier as he made to move past him.
"Well... you have to tell
her now... don't ya", he said simply.
Xavier’s lip curled up in a grin as he ascended the stairs and strode into the hallway. Xavier thought long and hard about his memories with Ellie in her back garden when they were younger, and he apparated, willing himself to be there again, back at Godric’s Hollow.
