They continued walking through the thick forest guiding the sheep as best they could before resorting to magic and levitating them through the trees. “Almost there”, said Charlie, “You’re going to love this, it’s a special treat”, he said as he grinned once more. Ellouise got a sick feeling in her stomach, if it involved live sheep and a dark foreboding forest it was sure to be an experience, though at this point she wasn’t sure if this was one that she wanted. The soon reached a large meadow by a hillside. And in the side of the hill Ellouise could just make out a dark shape which appeared to be the mouth to a cave. She held her breathe while Charlie whistled. Ellouise was rooted to the spot with excitement and fear, she watched on as a long large figure came stomping out of the cave. Ellouise couldn’t believe her eyes, the large figure had bright orange eyes like lanterns, was smooth-scaled and copper-coloured with charming black-ridge markings. Its short horns seemed out of proportion with its long fangs, and its long tail trailed behind it.
“I’d like you to meet Cito and Cornu. Aren’t they beautiful?” asked Charlie. They? Thought Ellouise, she looked back at the marvellous creature and sure enough standing behind it was a slightly shorter version.
“Are they Peruvian Vipertooth’s?” she asked in amazement as she watched the two dragons slowly approach them, wings raised threateningly and nostrils flaring.
“Yep, they sure are”, replied Charlie gleefully as he threw the dragons the sheep. “They’re the smallest and swiftest dragons known to the wizarding kind”, he said as he watched them devour the prey. “ They do prefer to feed on humans rather than livestock, but since the International Confederation of Wizards was forced to exterminate a vast number of the Vipertooth population they have become more complacent. Plus I’ve known these two for about eight years now. I saw them hatch from their eggs”, he added. “Don’t worry, they won’t bite, they’re surprisingly domesticated”. Ellouise hesitated and hung back as Charlie approached them, an arm outstretched. The larger of the two dragons, about eleven feet in length, lowered its head in Charlie’s direction, allowing him to stroke its smooth glistening scales. Slowly Ellouise approached the dragons, their giant lantern eyes watching her every step. Charlie stood close to Ellouise’s side and motioned for her to put out her hand. As she did the bigger dragon pulled its head up apprehensively then dipped it back down, sniffing at her. Its hot breath warmed her like a furnace, huffing and puffing curiously. Soon she was patting and stroking its smooth scales, they felt surprisingly cold. She had expected the dragons body to feel warm and comforting like a hot water bottle almost like its breath, but instead it was icy cold.
“What do you think?” asked Charlie as he watched her intently waiting for a reaction.
“I think they’re brilliant”, replied Ellouise, still in awe.
“Fantastic, hop on then. Cito is a gentle flyer”, he said gesturing to the bigger dragon.
Ellouise froze. “Hop on?” she repeated, a nervousness in her voice.
“Yeah, I want to take you flying”, he said as if it was a normal thing to do with a dragon.
“You, you ride them?” she stuttered.
Charlie just grinned and climbed onto the dragons sleek back, fitting comfortable behind its wings. He held out his hand to help pull Ellouise up and she took it. She found it difficult to clamber aboard even with Charlie’s help and she couldn’t help but wonder how many times he had done it before if he found it so easy. The dragons scales were silky smooth, and it was all too easy for her to slip and slide around on its back. In the end Ellouise flung her arms around Charlie’s middle and held on tightly resting her head against his back.
“You ready?” he asked.
“Suppose I don’t have a choice”, Ellouise replied.
And with that they were off, the dragon had lowered its body tactfully and kicked off hard. It soared up toward the sky, flapping its copper wings furiously until it got high enough above the cloud bank before letting itself glide gracefully, cutting through wisps of cloud with its long tail. Ellouise peered down over the side of the dragon, its wings outstretched like sails guiding it smoothly through the air. They were surrounded by a sea of soft fluffy clouds, the sun shone from somewhere just in front of them, it almost seemed as if it was within reaching distance. Charlie had been right, Cito was incredibly gentle and incredibly swift. Ellouise felt as though she was on top of the world, and she really was.
“Thanks Charlie”, she whispered in his ear. What do you think?
